Interim Director of Software Engineering

Great opportunity for an Interim Director of Engineering to join a leading retail client in Manchester for an initial 6 month contract outside IR35.

You'll report directly to the CTO and will lead an engineering function of 100+ people through a significant digital and cultural transformation, transitioning existing platforms to a cloud-native, event-driven, microservices architecture, and the department towards product-based teams and a DevOps culture.

You'll be responsible for building out the engineering function and developing a target operating model, working with teams to embed a strong engineering culture to drive accountability and champion best practices.

You will also work alongside third-party consultancies and ensure seamless integration within the enterprise business.

As a strong engineering leader, you'll balance technical decision making with effective people management to inspire and develop your teams.

Skills:

• Proven experience in leading large engineering functions through digital transformation.
• Experience with cloud-native, event-driven, microservices architecture.
• Strong background in DevOps practices.
• Experience working with product-based teams.
• Ability to call out inefficiencies and drive improvements.
• Experience in an enterprise business environment.
• Experience in a consumer-facing business.
• Strong leadership and people management skills.
• Ability to champion engineering best practices.
• Excellent technical skills and hands-on experience in software development.

Software/Tech:

• Cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform)
• Microservices architecture
• DevOps tools and practices
• Event-driven systems
• Programming languages (Java, TypeScript, C#)
