Part-time Project Journalist

Willmott Dixon are looking to expand our award-winning Knowledge Team. We are seeking a part-time Project Journalist to create engaging, accessible and in-depth content about our exciting construction projects. This written content is essential in helping us to promote our business and win work.

Willmott Dixon's Knowledge Service supports our work-winning teams by collecting, collating and sharing information on our business - our achievements, our approach, and the brilliant buildings we deliver. By providing our people with the evidence they need to create engaging collateral and winning bids, we play a pivotal role in Willmott Dixon's continued growth.

You will report to our Head of Knowledge and through your work support our business-wide work-winning community. We are flexible on location, although some travel to our London office will be required, and the working hours will be 22.5 hours/3 days per week. Work/life balance is important to us so you will also be supported to work from home in a hybrid way. This role will involve continuous communication with people working on live projects, so some travel to our sites is required.

We envisage someone with experience in journalism being well suited to this role and while previous experience in construction is not essential, the successful candidate should be comfortable with writing about technical topics.

The key responsibilities will include:

  • Researching and writing engaging and relevant content for selected projects that will feature on our online platform, the Project Journal; proactively sourcing and reviewing existing documents, analysing and interpreting project data, interviewing project teams and writing content to draw out pertinent information and stories to support business growth
  • Quickly establishing a collaborative relationship with the project team to agree all project contributors and milestones
  • Proactively planning and maintaining a rolling interview schedule throughout the project lifecycle; Interviewing the project lead and contributors to identify and extract relevant information. This includes travelling to site, visiting live environments
  • Making the process as efficient as possible for our project teams; gathering and reviewing all relevant material, including some technical documents, before each interview to pull out stories and identify areas for specific questioning
  • Collaboratively working with regional teams to identify new projects for inclusion on the Project Journal; maintaining a pipeline of activity that meets current and future business needs
  • Working collaboratively with other Project Journalists to continually improve the service offering and support one another with workload peaks and troughs
  • Support the Head of Knowledge with the continuous improvement, development, evolution and expansion of the Knowledge Service, ensuring it always meets business needs

Essential and Desirable Criteria

Essential criteria:

  • Experience of writing copy/content of publishable quality, as a journalist, communications professional - or similar.
  • Ability to understand technical topics and write about them in an accessible way
  • Able to use Microsoft suite of office programmes including Excel, Word and Outlook
  • Comfortable with learning how to use and navigate new systems, for example our content management systems
  • Attention to detail
  • Curious and analytical
  • Excellent active listening skills
  • Committed to continual personal development
  • Self-starter/able to organise current and upcoming workload
  • Clean driving licence/access to a car

Desirable:

  • NCTJ qualification or similar
