Overall Purpose of the Role:

To ensure that the Special Education Needs (SEN) provision is effectively and efficiently led and managed across the academy. The SENCO will manage the day-to-day operational and strategic aspects of policy and the department to level the playing field for students with SEN. The role involves ensuring that all legal and statutory requirements are met for students with SEN.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Strategic, Operational, and Legal Direction:
  • Provide leadership for the development and oversight of SEN provision in line with academy policies and national legislation.
  • Ensure effective communication systems are in place, including feedback about students' progress to inform future planning.
  • Maintain and update the SEN register, ensuring that all staff are informed and prepared to make the necessary adaptations for students.
  • Liaise with external agencies for comprehensive intervention and support to meet students' needs.
  • Keep up-to-date with national and local SEN initiatives and adjust practice accordingly.
  1. Assessments and Access Arrangements:
  • Oversee the coordination of student assessments and manage access arrangements for exams.
  • Conduct assessments on entry and as required, analyze data, and communicate outcomes for teaching and learning.
  • Ensure compliance with access arrangement protocols for public examinations in collaboration with the examinations officer.
  1. Leadership and Management of SEN Staff:
  • Lead and manage all staff within the SEN department, including appraisals and identifying training needs.
  • Provide professional development for staff to ensure inclusive teaching practices.
  • Build and manage a team of highly trained and effective teaching assistants, supporting them to help students achieve success and independence.
  1. Resource Deployment:
  • Advise the senior leadership team on the deployment of resources and staff in relation to SEN support.
  • Communicate with staff to ensure appropriate use of learning resources and technologies.
  • Maintain and explore new opportunities to enhance the SEN resource pool.
  1. Monitoring and Evaluation:
  • Monitor and evaluate the impact of the SEN department's work, making necessary adjustments to improve outcomes for students.
  • Regularly report to the senior leadership team and governing body on the effectiveness of SEN provision.

Relationships:

  • Responsible to the principal as delegated.
  • Collaborate with the Senior Leadership Team (SLT), external agencies, and other stakeholders to support the needs of SEN students.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Operate within the stated policies and practices of the client school.
  • Align with the vision and core values of the school and promote the success of the SEN team.
  • Ensure all work is compliant with equal opportunities, health and safety regulations, and safeguarding policies.

This is a temporary-to-permanent role, starting with Tradewind Recruitment and transitioning into a permanent position with the client school.
