Job Summary:

We are seeking a qualified Electrical Engineer to provide essential electrical maintenance and support within a PFI enviroment. This role is critical in ensuring the safety, reliability, and efficient functioning of electrical systems in a healthcare environment where patient care and well-being are paramount. The Electrical Engineer will be responsible for both planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and reactive repairs on various electrical systems, ensuring compliance with healthcare and safety regulations. This role requires a high level of technical expertise, attention to detail, and the ability to work within a sensitive and secure environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Electrical Maintenance and Repairs:

  • Carry out maintenance, repairs, and fault finding on electrical systems including lighting, power distribution, emergency lighting, fire alarms, and security systems.
  • Ensure electrical systems comply with statutory regulations, including IEE Wiring Regulations (18th Edition), and HTM (Health Technical Memoranda) standards specific to healthcare.
  • Conduct regular testing and inspection of electrical installations, ensuring all systems are compliant and documentation is kept up to date.
  • Perform reactive repairs on electrical systems, ensuring quick resolution of faults to minimise disruption to patient care and hospital operations.

Critical Systems Management:

  • Maintain and monitor the hospital’s critical electrical systems, including power to medical equipment, life safety systems, backup generators, and uninterruptible power supplies (UPS).
  • Ensure the electrical systems supporting sensitive psychiatric care environments are reliable and secure, with a particular focus on patient safety.
  • Conduct regular checks on anti-ligature electrical fixtures, ensuring compliance with psychiatric safety standards.
  • Respond rapidly to emergency electrical issues to ensure patient safety and the continuous operation of critical hospital services.

Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM):

  • Execute the PPM schedule to ensure all electrical systems are functioning efficiently and prevent unexpected breakdowns.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities and ensure all works are documented in the Computer-Aided Facilities Management (CAFM) system.
  • Inspect and test electrical equipment in accordance with healthcare requirements to ensure compliance with safety standards.

Health & Safety Compliance:

  • Adhere to all relevant health and safety regulations, including the Electricity at Work Regulations, while maintaining awareness of any specific risks in a psychiatric care environment.
  • Conduct risk assessments, prepare method statements, and ensure all electrical work is carried out with appropriate safety measures.
  • Take part in safety audits and address any corrective actions to ensure full compliance.
  • Ensure the appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and maintain high safety standards throughout all tasks.

Person Specification:

Qualifications:

  • NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in Electrical Installation or Electrical Engineering.
  • 18th Edition IEE Wiring Regulations certification is essential.
  • City & Guilds 2391 Testing and Inspection (or equivalent) is desirable.
  • Any additional health and safety qualifications, such as IOSH or NEBOSH, would be advantageous.

Experience:

  • Proven experience as an Electrical Engineer, ideally within a healthcare, psychiatric, or similar secure environment.
  • Strong knowledge of healthcare-specific electrical systems, including anti-ligature fittings and critical backup systems.
  • Experience working with fire alarms, security systems, and emergency lighting in a healthcare setting.
  • Experience performing both planned preventative maintenance and reactive repairs.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work efficiently in a high-pressure environment.
  • Ability to work effectively in a secure environment, respecting patient confidentiality and safety protocols.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams within the hospital.
  • A proactive and organised approach to work, with attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining high standards.
  • Competence in using CAFM systems.
