Head of Principal Design

A leading construction consultancy is seeking an experienced and ambitious Head of Principal Design to lead their Building Safety Act (BSA) division.

The Head of Principal Design Role

As the Head of Principal Design, you will take strategic responsibility for the consultancy's Principal Design services, ensuring compliance with BSA and CDM 2015 regulations across diverse and high-profile projects. You will lead the development of the consultancy's BSA offering, building and managing a team of Principal Designers and CDM Advisors. This role offers the chance to influence the future of the consultancy, drive innovation, and establish best practices in this evolving area of the construction industry.

Head of Principal Design Key Responsibilities

• Provide strategic leadership for the consultancy's Principal Design and BSA services.
• Oversee compliance with Building Safety Act and CDM 2015 regulations on complex projects.
• Build, manage, and mentor a high-performing team of Principal Designers and CDM Advisors.
• Act as the primary point of contact for key clients, providing expert guidance on design risk management, health and safety, and regulatory compliance.
• Lead business development initiatives, including producing fee proposals, securing new clients, and maintaining strong relationships with existing clients.
• Conduct and oversee site inspections, audits, and risk assessments to ensure project compliance.

The Head of Principal Design

• Extensive experience in Design, Principal Design, Building Control, CDM, or a related role.
• Comprehensive knowledge of the Building Safety Act, CDM 2015 regulations, and health and safety standards.
• NEBOSH Construction Certificate or equivalent qualification; professional membership with APS (IMaPS or CMaPS) is highly desirable.
• Proven experience in managing teams and leading large-scale projects.
• Strong leadership, organisational, and strategic thinking skills.
• Excellent client-facing and communication abilities.
