SEN Tutor

ASEND tuition supports SEND pupils and continues their learning while they cannot access school or don’t have a school place. We are looking for an SEN Tutor with experience working with teenagers with learning difficulties to support an autistic pupil/child in Stanford-le-Hope to develop into an independent adult.

What ASEND Tuition Is

We are looking for inspirational tutors to support children and young people with SEND in Thurrock. We support pupils with SEND who are not attending school for a number of reasons including Mental Health issues, or lack of a suitable school place. We aim to prepare them for a return to mainstream or special school.

We tutor pupils of all ages face-to-face within school times, and in a range of settings including homes, schools, community centres and out in the community. Our tuition is completely pupil-focused and can target developing early learning, following an academic curriculum, providing emotional support or developing life skills. We need a wide range of tutors to support our pupils to meet their specific needs and ensure good progress. We work very hard to match each tutor with pupils who can most benefit from their skills and expertise.

About The Pupil

Our pupil is a 15-year-old boy with ASD, who experiences challenges in language and social communication development. He may show signs of anxiety and become dysregulated, especially in noisy or unstructured environments. He has moderate/severe learning difficulties and works below age-related expectations, but can communicate his needs in short sentences and enjoys activities like running, swimming, and being around animals. He benefits from structured, calm settings and familiar faces, as sudden changes can increase his anxiety. Safety awareness in the community is a concern, and he requires support with road safety and interactions with strangers.

Recently he has been learning about shapes (2D and 3D shapes), fractions, literacy skills, practising conversation skills for going into the community and interacting with other people to improve independence. It will be the tutor’s role to continue this development to help prepare him for becoming an adult.

About you:

• You’ll have some experience with SEN: Severe Learning Difficulties, Social Communication and Preparing for Adulthood

• You may be an experienced tutor or teacher or have experience working with children in a therapeutic way

• You’ll have a passion for helping pupils overcome any barriers to learning and difficulties with engagement

• You’ll be good at building rapport and strong relationships with children and their families - we work closely with families to create a plan

• Ideally, have some experience of helping children with their learning

• Have the ability to motivate and inspire pupils

• Use a person-centred approach in their work

• Make the wellbeing, achievement, and progress of your pupils central to everything that you plan and do

• Have the determination and energy to bring about continuous improvement.
