Tradewind Recruitment is seeking a passionate Year 1 Teaching Assistant on behalf of a progressive and inclusive 3-form entry mainstream primary academy in Ealing. This Southall-based primary school is looking to appoint a dedicated and skilled teaching assistant with experience supporting children with special educational needs (SEN).

In this role, you will work with a high-needs autistic child on a reduced timetable, providing one-on-one support until midday. For the remainder of the day, you will assist other classes or children. The role requires a compassionate and confident TA who can build a trusting relationship with the child and assist him in managing his behaviour effectively.

Responsibilities:

  • Adapt learning materials to create accessible, engaging lessons tailored to the child's unique needs.
  • Implement and follow the child's Individual Education Plan (IEP) and SEN strategies to meet specific developmental and academic goals.
  • Break tasks into manageable steps, using visual aids to support comprehension.
  • Monitor and document behavioural patterns, applying positive reinforcement to encourage progress.
  • Collaborate with the SENCO and professionals to implement behaviour intervention plans (BIPs), helping to manage and reduce challenging behaviours.
  • Use de-escalation techniques such as sensory breaks and calming exercises to prevent over-stimulation.
  • Establish consistent routines to provide stability and reduce anxiety.
  • Support communication by utilising tools like PECS, Makaton, or AAC devices, enabling the child to express needs and preferences.
  • Facilitate social interactions, modelling and prompting appropriate social behaviours with peers and adults.
  • Provide emotional support to help the child manage stress and anxiety.
  • Encourage social skill development, such as turn-taking, greetings, and respecting personal space.
  • Promote independence by gradually encouraging the child to take on small tasks, building confidence.
  • Attend to sensory needs by offering sensory breaks or resources like fidget toys to maintain focus.

Requirements:

  • Previous experience as an SEN Teaching Assistant in a UK-based school.
  • Right to work in the UK.
  • Strong understanding of the KS1 curriculum.
  • Positive and ambitious attitude toward learning.
  • Availability for full-time, long-term work starting November.
