SEN Teacher
A large special needs (SEN) school based in North West London is seeking an SEN teacher with some recent SLD (Severe Learning Difficulties) or ASD (Autistic Spectrum Disorder) experience to join their team from September on a 1 year contract initially with a view to a permanent job for the right person.
The School:
This is a friendly, supportive and very well run primary SEN school for children with autism and complex learning needs in North West London that is been rated as "outstanding" by OfSTED. Facilities are excellent although parking can be a little limited, fortunately public transport links are great as the school is based in zone 2 and only 3 minute walk from stations linking easily to most of Greater London.
The ethos of this North West London SEN school is fantastic, morale is high and having worked with them for over 7 years I can honestly say that people remark constantly about how much they enjoy working there and feel appreciated and invested in. The school teaches two different curricula with a CBT sensory curriculum for most pupils based on the EYFS framework and national curriculum and the most complex none verbal learners work on a verbal behaviours model created by the school which works on developing communication skills.
The SEN Teacher Role :
Ideally the successful applicant will have a proven track record working as an SEN Teacher in an SEN environment but the Headteacher will consider a primary trained teacher with a passion for SEN and a proven track record as a teacher and a can do attitude.
The successful SEN Teacher applicant will be teaching a mixed KS1 class (6 pupils) with Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD) and Autism (ASD). The majority of the children have communication and sensory needs as well as developmental delays. The class consists of 8 pupils who are all working at P levels, as a result experience of the EYFS curriculum would be advantageous, though not essential.
Much of the work you would be doing will be based loosely on the Early Years curriculum with a particular focus on developing social and communication skills. As and SEN Teacher you will be working alongside and line managing two really friendly learning support assistants (LSAs) who know the children and the school procedures and will help you get up to speed quickly. Some experience of PECS and Makaton would be advantageous but training is available.
The successful SEN Teacher candidate will be flexible, with the ability to use their own initiative where required. Experience working in an SEN school or with SLD/ASD children would be an advantage but the school are clear that they want a good teacher first and foremost - excellent training is available. They would be more than happy to support an excellent practitioner with passion for SEN but limited SEN experience.
Progress with these pupils can be slow when compared to their contemporaries so patience, a caring nature, passion for the job and strong self belief will be essential.
